GDC Minnessota Deaf Camp July/August 2009
Our goal is to enhance the intellectual development of Deaf youth by broadening their understanding of the world, and our place in it, through creation of a genuine multicultural forum in which to share experiences from diverse ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds of Deafness.
GDC is a 501 c 3 non-profited organization based in Minneapolis.
Since 1997 we have promoted empowerment of Deaf youth locally and
globally through university scholarships, mentorship and cultural
exchange experiences. GDC’s achievements include organizing Deaf youth
from Minnesota to visit and work with their Deaf counterparts in Kenya
and Jamaica.
About the Minnesota Deaf Summer Camp Cultural Exchange
Our
goal is to enhance the intellectual development of Deaf youth by
broadening their understanding of the world, and our place in it,
through creation of a genuine multicultural forum in which to share
experiences from diverse ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds of
Deafness.
Our goals will be realized through the facilitation
of a cultural exchange and awakening amongst Deaf youth from Deaf
Culture Camp Minnesota (DCCM) and Deaf youth from Jamaica Association
for the Deaf (JAD). Our Venues will be JAD, in Kingston Jamaica, and
DCCM in Fredrick, Wisconsin, against the proposed 2009 timetable.
* January 2009, 3 members from DCCM and GDC visit 25 Deaf
JAD youth in Kingston, Jamaica for 5 days, to present about DCCM, learn
about JAD and make selection of 3 Deaf JAD Jamaican youth to
participate in summer DCCM in Minnesota with 20 Deaf youth.
* July/August 2009, selected 3 Deaf JAD Jamaica youth come to Minnesota
for 10 days to interact and share with 20 Deaf youth at DCCM.
Our
output…greater awareness of, and appreciation for, multicultural and
diversity of our Community and our world for 3 Deaf Jamaican youth DCCM
participants, 20 Deaf Minnesotan youth, 22 Deaf JAD youth in Jamaica,
and 15 young Deaf and hearing adults in Minnesota, for a total of 60
participants.
