Our goal is to enhance the intellectual development of Deaf youth by broadening their understanding of the world, and our place in it, through creation of a genuine multicultural forum in which to share experiences from diverse ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds of Deafness.

GDC is a 501 c 3 non-profited organization based in Minneapolis.  Since 1997 we have promoted empowerment of Deaf youth locally and globally through university scholarships, mentorship and cultural exchange experiences.  GDC’s achievements include organizing Deaf youth from Minnesota to visit and work with their Deaf counterparts in Kenya and Jamaica.

About the Minnesota Deaf Summer Camp Cultural Exchange

Our goal is to enhance the intellectual development of Deaf youth by broadening their understanding of the world, and our place in it, through creation of a genuine multicultural forum in which to share experiences from diverse ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds of Deafness.

Our goals will be realized through the facilitation of a cultural exchange and awakening amongst Deaf youth from Deaf Culture Camp Minnesota (DCCM)  and Deaf youth from Jamaica Association for the Deaf (JAD).  Our Venues will be JAD, in Kingston Jamaica, and DCCM in Fredrick, Wisconsin, against the proposed 2009 timetable.

    * January 2009, 3 members from DCCM and GDC visit 25 Deaf JAD youth in Kingston, Jamaica for 5 days, to present about DCCM, learn about JAD and make selection of 3 Deaf JAD Jamaican youth to participate in summer DCCM in Minnesota with 20 Deaf youth.

    * July/August 2009, selected 3 Deaf JAD Jamaica youth come to Minnesota for 10 days to interact and share with 20 Deaf youth at DCCM.

Our output…greater awareness of, and appreciation for, multicultural and diversity of our Community and our world for 3 Deaf Jamaican youth DCCM participants, 20 Deaf Minnesotan youth, 22 Deaf JAD youth in Jamaica, and 15 young Deaf and hearing adults in Minnesota, for a total of 60 participants.
