Reducing HIV Vulnerability

The United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) has committed support for promoting HIV awareness in the Deaf Community. The initiative entitled “Reducing HIV Vulnerability in Deaf Children through Peer Education and Dance” was launched at this year’s JCDC Deaf Dance Finals held at The Little Theatre on Friday June 12, 2009, but its impact will be reflected in the 2010 Competition when dance-skit entries will be required to carry HIV/AIDS prevention messages.

Island Traffic Authority Workshop March/April 2009

The Jamaica Association for the Deaf (JAD) engaged with the Ministry of Transport and Works and the Island Traffic Authority (ITA) to present a month-long course to sensitize Motor Vehicle Inspectors and Police Officers to Jamaican Sign Language (JSL) and Deaf culture.

Our goal is to enhance the intellectual development of Deaf youth by broadening their understanding of the world, and our place in it, through creation of a genuine multicultural forum in which to share experiences from diverse ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds of Deafness.
